چکیده

Exertional dyspnoea is commonly an early feature in respiratory disease; however, neurological disease may limit mobility and, as a consequence, preclude this symptom. Diagnosis of respiratory dysfunction resulting from neurological disease may therefore require a higher index of clinical suspicion or the application of specific tests; this exercise is worthwhile if it allows advance detection and discussion and (where appropriate) treatment, of impending overt respiratory dysfunction. Specific symptoms and appropriate tests will be discussed in the text and have also been reviewed in detail elsewhere. However, it should be recalled that, at the most basic level, the function of the respiratory muscle pump is to produce inspiratory airflow, which is related to the ability to generate a subatmospheric pressure within the thorax. Thus, although access to detailed investigation of respiratory muscle is not universal, we encourage measurement of both the lying and standing vital capacity and static mouth/nasal pressures, 4 which can be done either in the neurological clinic or in any standard lung function laboratory. This review deals with acute neuromuscular respiratory disease (including those aspects of respiratory muscle function relevant to intensive care), chronic neuromuscular respiratory disease, sleep related disorders, respiratory consequences of neurological disease, and finally with neurological features of respiratory disease.

Headache: A Presentation of Pompe Disease; A Case Report

Pompe disease, also termed glycogen storage disease type II or acid maltase deficiency, caused by deficient activity of acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA), the glycogen degrading lysosomal enzyme. As a result, massive lysosomal glycogen deposits in the numerous organs including the muscles. In Pompe disease weakness of truncal muscles is a prominent presentation which results in respiratory failure a...

Doppler Microembolic Signals in Behcet\'s Disease with Nervous System Involvement

Background: Behçet’s disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory vasculitis of unknown etiology, and vasculitis being its major pathological feature. Objectives: We studied the prevalence of microembolic signals (MES) in patients with diagnosis Behçet's disease. We also tried to determine the frequency of MES in BD patients with or without neurological involvement. Mater...

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in a Patient with Behçet’s ‎Disease

Behçet’s ‎disease is a multisystem vasculitis. Its neurological involvement mostly includes parenchymal and non-parenchymal central nervous system manifestations. Peripheral nervous system presentations are rare. A 32-yr-old male patient who fulfilled the international study group criteria for Behçet’s disease, referred to our center with walking difficulty and repeated falling downs. Neurologi...

Non-adherence to Disease-Modifying Treatments in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating disease of the central nervous system. Usually, long-term MS medications are injected intramuscularly or subcutaneously, making them intolerable for many MS patients. Objectives: In the present study, the rate and the causes of non-adherence to MS disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) were assessed in patients with MS. Materials and Methods: Two ...

COVID-19-Associated Myelitis, Para/Post Infectious or Infectious Myelitis: A Case Report From the North of Iran

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, besides the most prevalent respiratory and systemic symptoms, some neurological symptoms such as acute hemorrhagic necrotizing encephalopathy and myelitis associated with COVID-19 have been reported. It is suspected that COVID-19 involves different body systems via interaction with the ACE-2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) receptor. As ACE2 is express...
